Surfer for Life
I grew up surfing on the coast of Malibu in the 70s and 80s when surfing was a counter-culture 'sport'. Surfers operated in shadows, extremely clicky. Forecasts were local knowledge, and the range of known spots were only those reachable on a tank of gas.
Early Tech Adopter
I became an early adopter of every available tool to help forecast where I should surf and when. From 976-Surf phone reports to newspaper tide tables to my own local knowledge, my world expanded from not just where I could drive, but where I traveled. The mobile phone changed it all – first with calls to friends asking for real-time conditions, then text messages, and eventually, checking buoy data on a full web browser while looking at a remote beach off the grid.
Data in the Void
Over the last 5 years, my close friends and I maintained an active text thread that became our surf intelligence network. Every morning, reports would flow in: "Indicators is chest high, glassy until 10 AM, then wind picks up." We'd share buoy readings, tide predictions, and real-time observations, trying to piece together patterns to predict when and where the surf would be good. We became obsessive - analyzing wind shifts, discussing swell direction changes, debating how sandbars would respond. Despite years of collecting this information and thousands of messages, all this valuable knowledge disappeared into the void of our text history. We couldn't search it, analyze patterns, or extract insights from our collective experience. This frustration became the catalyst for something better.
The Onda Solution
As technologists, seeing how fast and accurate LLMs are making almost every industry, we knew we could build a better tool to satiate two things every surfer spends hours and money on: finding the best surf spot to surf and sharing that with their friends. Thus, the concept for Onda was formed.
